I love that The Bench infected you so long ago. Funny thing about this picture--it looks exactly like our Bench, at least as I can remember it. Bench: is that you??

Ah, a fellow Good Girl. People must think this is a good thing to be, but in reality, not really. You spend a childhood in fear of losing the approval and love of those close to you, even if, in reality, that would never happen. Being Nice and Good is the solution to this perceived problem and can leave us stuck on the Nice and Good train for a long time!

As for the Bench, I read a book growing up by Noel Streatfeild called Gemma, where in her secondary school, naughty children who got sent to the headmaster had to sit on a massive chair outside his office till he was ready to see them, and everyone could see that they had misbehaved. Petrifying but hot!

You know, after the first time I read "The Benefit of the Doubt" nearly 10 years ago, The Bench has been completely lodged in my subconscious as just about the hottest and the scariest thing that could happen at school. I love that you wouldn't have just be sent to the office of somebody in authority, but specifically to The Bench, breathing power into an inanimate object. I wouldn't be surprised if I've unintentionally plagiarised it in a story at some point, as it's very much become an integral part of my fantasy landscape.
Your school would be so pleased :)
